College of Materials Science and Engineering

Occupying an important position in the material discipline of local universities of science and technology, the teaching and research team of Materials Science and Engineering College is enormously powerful. There are 180 teaching and administrative staff, including 138 full-time teachers, 23 professors, 47 associate professors, 23 doctoral advisers, 117 teachers with doctoral degree, accounting for 85% of the total number of teachers. There are 3 double hired academicians, 1 National Outstanding Youth Fund Recipient, 4 Ministry of Education New Century Excellent Talents, 8 "Hundred Talents Program" experts in Shanxi Province, 3 young and middle-aged innovative talents of colleges and universities in Shanxi Province, 4 academic leaders in the new century in Shanxi Province, 15 outstanding young academic leaders of higher schools in Shanxi Province, 2 distinguished teachers in Shanxi Province, 1 bilingual teaching demonstration course of the Ministry of Education 1. Presently, there are 1977 undergraduates, 485 masters of engineering and 70 doctoral students.

The college is equipped with 4 departments (materials processing engineering department, material science department, material physics and chemistry department, metallurgical engineering department), 2 institutes (welding material research institute, surface engineering research institute) and 2 centers (experimental management center, analysis and testing center), opening seven undergraduate majors, namely, materials molding and control engineering, metal materials engineering, inorganic nonmetallic materials engineering, polymer materials and engineering, materials physics, materials chemistry and metallurgical engineering. Among them, the material molding and control engineering is the undergraduate brand profession in Shanxi, which was awarded "the central and local strengths and characteristics of the professional laboratory" in 2007, "national characteristics of professional construction" in 2008, and "Outstanding engineer education and training program" pilot profession by the Ministry of Education in 2010; approved "the national vocational education teacher training key construction base" in 2012; confirmed engineering education professional accreditation twice by the Ministry of Education in 2014and 2016; approved dominant specialty construction projects of colleges and universities in Shanxi in 2016; granted national five-star professions twice in 2016 and 2017. Metal materials engineering specialty was listed featured program construction of Shanxi colleges and universities in 2012. Materials molding and control engineering laboratory and materials physical chemistry and metallurgical laboratory are featured disciplines labs constructed by both central and local areas. Engineering materials processing and processing of basic experimental center as well as materials science and engineering experimental teaching center are teaching demonstration centers in Shanxi higher schools.

Two first-level disciplines (material science and engineering, and metallurgical engineering) are included in the college. The former one is equipped with a mobile post-doctoral station, class-one doctoral discipline and class-one master unit (including three secondary disciplines, namely, materials processing engineering, materials science, and materials physics and chemistry), as well as materials engineering field with a master's degree in engineering. Materials science and engineering disciplines are dominant subject climbing plan construction of Shanxi Province, among which materials processing engineering discipline is national key discipline, materials science is provincial key disciplines, materials physics and chemistry is the construction of key disciplines in Shanxi Province, metallurgical engineering discipline is the master's degree level subject with new material interface science and engineering key laboratory, advanced provincial magnesium-based materials key laboratory, semiconductor lighting engineering national-local joint research center, provincial steel materials postgraduates education innovation center and other technological innovation platforms.

In recent years, the college has undertaken more than 100 national "973" projects, the national "863" projects, the National Natural Science Fund projects, international cooperation projects and provincial and ministerial level projects, its scientific research funds amounted to more than 3,000 yuan; won 1 national technology invention (second prize), 1 provincial scientific and technological progress (second prize), provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological progress (first prize 2), (second prize 8), (third prize 5); published works (textbooks) 30, authorized more than 150 national invention patents. Published more than 800 academic papers, among which more than 600 articles were included by Sci and EI, more than 10 articles were much-cited by ESI.

2015, 2016 materials science disciplines rank into the ESI 1% of the world's principal disciplines.

Material Processing and Control Engineering

In March 2017, China Science Evaluation Research Center (RCCSE), Wuhan University, China Education Quality Evaluation Center together with China Science and Education Evaluation Network (www.nseac.com) grand launch of "2017 Chinese universities and disciplines professional evaluation report", which released the undergraduate professional list of Chinese Universities and our school materials molding and control engineering professional ranked 5th of 211 same profession ranking (top 2.3%), for two consecutive years into the ranks of the national 5-star undergraduate profession.

Cultivation Goals: The students of this major are trained to adapt to regional economic construction and industry and social development needs, all-round development of morality, intelligence, physique and aesthetic, with basic knowledge and coping capacity of mechanical science, materials science, automation and computer, capable of using modern tools to do scientific research, technology development, design and manufacturing, and decision-making management within the domain of material processing theory, material control, automatic control, forming process design and advanced materials engineering; with innovative ability, communication and communication skills, self-learning awareness and ability to solve complex engineering problems.

The professional students mainly learn the mechanical design and principles, materials science and various types of hot processing technology basic theoretical knowledge, master all kinds of hot processing technology and equipment design methods, accept the basic training of modern mechanical engineers, with basic ability of taking up various types of heat processing technology and equipment design, production organization and management.

Cultivation Requirements: The training of students with a wide range of natural science, humanities and social science knowledge and a high level of foreign language and computer applications; with the professional field of casting molding, plastic forming, material connection, mold design and manufacturing projects necessary professional knowledge and skilled solutions to complex engineering issues and innovative awareness and lifelong learning ability, and through the practice of teaching to complete the basic training of modern machinery or materials engineers. The profession has three directions, namely, casting technology and engineering direction, plastic forming technology and engineering direction, welding technology and engineering direction.

Metal Material Engineering

Cultivation Goals: Students in the profession are trained to be senior composite talents to meet the needs of economic, social and technological development, moral, intellectual, physical and aesthetic development, with metal materials engineering professional knowledge, basic skills and innovative spirit, with international perspective, capable of working in the enterprises, institutions of higher learning or research institutes taking up research of metal materials, composition - process and equipment design, organization and performance testing, manufacturing, technology development and management and other aspects of the work. 5 years after graduation, students may become the backbones of the enterprises, middle management cadres or have the ability to be engaged in the field of metal materials related to scientific research capabilities.

Cultivation Requirements: The students mainly learn the basic theory and related knowledge of metal materials science and engineering; understand the basic rules of the relationship between the composition, organization structure, production process and performance or service behavior of metal materials; accept material preparation, performance analysis and basic skills of testing skills; master the basic methods of metal material design, preparation and process control; with the development of metal materials and organization of production, performance optimization, new materials development and other knowledge and abilities.

Inorganic Non-metal Material Engineering

Cultivation Goals: Students in this major are trained to be with basic chemical science, inorganic non-metallic materials science and computer basic knowledge and application ability; capable of working in the fields of inorganic non-metallic materials structure research and analysis, material preparation, material modification, materials processing, taking up scientific research, technology development, technology and equipment design, production and operation, decision-making management and other aspects of works.

Cultivation Requirements: The students mainly study the theoretical and professional knowledge of inorganic non-metallic materials and composite materials preparation, performance testing, structural characterization and production equipment. It is necessary to master the basic science and engineering theory of inorganic nonmetallic materials; has the ability of using natural science, economic and management knowledge indispensable for the research and engineering work of inorganic nonmetallic materials; has the ability and quality to synthesize the theory and technology of inorganic nonmetallic materials, capable of analysis and resolution of inorganic nonmetallic materials related to scientific research or engineering issues.

Metallurgical Engineering

Cultivation Goals:The major aims to cultivate the engineering and technical personnel who can adapt to regional economic construction and meet the needs of some industries and social development. With the all-around development of morality, intelligence, physique and aesthetics, they should master the basic theory of modern metallurgical engineering, equipped with professional knowledge and basic skills concerning the iron and steel metallurgy and nonferrous metals metallurgy, good at applying the modern information technology, familiar with the iron and steel metallurgy and nonferrous metal metallurgy new technology, and with the new tendency of technology development, which means they should have the international vision, innovative spirit, self-learning awareness and ability to solve complex engineering problems, thus, when they graduate 5 years later, they are capable to make their commitment to the production, design, technology development, training and management in the metallurgical engineering and its related fields.

Graduation Requirements: Graduates should take math, natural science, engineering foundation and metallurgical expertise, develop, select and use appropriate tools of scientific methods, technologies, resources, modern engineering and information technology with international perspectives, innovative spirit , self-learning awareness and the ability to solve complex engineering problems in the field of metallurgy.

Polymer Material and Engineering

Cultivation Goals: The major aims to cultivate the applied professional and technical personnel who master the expertises of polymer materials and engineering. In the realm of design, synthesis, modification and molding processing and other fields of polymer material, they are engaged in scientific research, technology development, technology and equipment design, production and management and other aspects. 5 years later after their graduation, in the condition of considering the premise of non-technical factors, they can reach the position of team leader or the enterprise's technical or management backbones, the outstanding graduates can enter the middle management positions.

Graduation Requirements: Require graduates to master the design of polymer materials, synthesis, modification methods, master the principle of polymer molding process, polymer materials processing technology and forming mold design of the basic theory and basic skills to understand the composition of polymer materials, structure and performance relationship, with the modification of polymer materials and processing technology research, design and analysis of the ability to test, with strong adaptability and lifelong learning ability.

Cultivation Goals: The major aims to cultivate the applied professional and technical personnel who can adapt to regional economic construction and meet the needs of some industries and social development. With the all-around development of morality, intelligence, physique and aesthetics, they should master the good humanistic quality, academic literacy and engineering literacy, with broad and basic theory as well as solid basic knowledge, expertise and application ability related to the physical learning and material physics. In the realm of optoelectronic materials (film materials) and other fields of polymer material, they are engaged in scientific research, technology development, and other aspects of management. And they also possess the spirt of innovation, self-learning awareness and ability to solve complex engineering problems.

Cultivation Requirements: The students mainly study materials, physics and optoelectronic materials (thin film materials) principles, technology and testing of the basic theoretical knowledge, with advanced materials in the design, manufacture, surface modification, quality inspection, new materials and the development of new products, materials control technology and materials regeneration and utilization, functional materials such as the development of basic capabilities. They should have the basic knowledge and expertise in mathematics, natural sciences, material engineering and specialized knowledge needed to solve complex engineering problems in the field of material engineering. They should have the ability to identify and refine, define and express, analyze and confirm intricate engineering problems. They should have the design / development capabilities of complex systems, components, and process in the field of materials engineering. The students should master the capabilities concerning the fields of experiment /implement, especially the capabilities of experiment / design in the fields of materials corrosion and protection, and the field of new energy materials. The students should possess the awareness of independent and lifelong learning, teamwork, as well as innovation and have project management capabilities. They can use the professional knowledge and experimental / design skills to comprehensively consider the social, health, safety, legal, cultural and environmental factors such as material chemistry to solve complex engineering problems.

Cultivation Requirements: Graduates should have the ability to study complex engineering issues in the field of materials chemistry, including the analysis of problems, design solutions, the implementation of experiments, the analysis and interpretation of data, drawing reasonable and effective conclusions, effectively communicating with the industry counterparts and the public, as well as having a certain international perspective.
