College of Mechanical and Vehicle Engineering

College of Mechanical and Vehicle Engineering is composed of Mechanical Manufacturing Department, Mechanical Design Department, Vehicle Engineering Department, Industrial Design Department, Electromechanical Engineering Department, Teaching Department of Mechanical Basics, Mechanical Experimental Technology Center, Mine Mechanic-Electric-Hydraulic Research Center, and Institute of Electromechanical Engineering, and offers four majors for the Bachelor's Degree, i.e. Mechanical Design & Manufacturing & Automation, Industrial Design, Vehicle Engineering, and Electromechanical Engineering.

College of Mechanical Engineering boasts 209 faculty members, including 28 professors, 58 associate professors, 7 doctoral tutors, 71 master tutors, 1 national-level teaching masters, and 5 provincial-level teaching masters. Now nearly 3,000 full-time students are studying in the College, including nearly 2,400 undergraduates, nearly 500 graduate students, and nearly 80 doctoral students.

College of Mechanical Engineering has 1 doctoral station of Level-1 discipline in Mechanical Engineering, 5 doctoral stations of Level-2 discipline in Electromechanical Engineering, Mechanical Design and Theory, Mechanical Manufacturing & Automation, Vehicle Engineering, Mining Machinery & Automation, 6 authorized stations for the master's degree in Mechanical Manufacturing & Automation, Mechanical Design & Theory, Electromechanical Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, Power Engineering & Engineering Thermal Physics, and Design Art, 1 postdoctoral research station in Mechanical Engineering, and also the right to grant the master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Power Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, and Industrial Design Engineering. Its disciplines in Electromechanical Engineering and Mechanical Design & Theory are the key disciplines of Shanxi Province, and Mechanical Manufacturing & Automation and Vehicle Engineering are the key construction disciplines of Shanxi Province.

College of Mechanical Engineering has established 1 national-level teaching demonstration center, 4 national-level engineering practice and education centers, 1 national-level teaching team, 1 national-level engineering center, 1 provincial-level collaborative innovation center, 2 provincial/departmental-level key scientific and technological innovation teams, 5 provincial/departmental-level experimental teaching centers, 4 provincial/departmental-level key laboratories, 6 provincial/departmental-level engineering technology centers or industrial centers, 3 postgraduate innovation centers of Shanxi Province, and 3 undergraduate innovation bases of Shanxi Province.

As a first-batch brand major and advantageous one of Shanxi Province, Mechanical Design & Manufacturing & Automation Major was granted as the characteristic specialty construction station of higher education by the Ministry of Education in 2007; included into the first-batch major implementing the Education Training Program for Outstanding Engineers launched by the Ministry of Education in 2010; designated as the National-level Pilot Major for Comprehensive Reform of Majors, selected as the Major for Government-sponsored International Exchange Program of Outstanding Undergraduate Students by the China Scholarship Council (CSC), and passed the certification of National Engineering Education Major, which is valid for three years, for the first time in 2013; and passed the certification of National Engineering Education Major for the second time in 2016. Vehicle Engineering Major, as the characteristic one of Shanxi Province, boasts all professional teachers with a doctorate, employs the experts of the "Provincial 100-expert Grogram", provincial famous automotive engineering experts, and backbone technicians from enterprises for professional guidance and academic research, and also cultivates innovative talents via the education and research platforms such as Shanxi Provincial Research Center of Modern Design Engineering Technology for Vehicle, Shanxi Provincial Postgraduate Education Innovation Center for Vehicle Engineering, Shanxi Provincial Postgraduate Education Innovation Center for Clean Fuel, Innovation Practice Base for Energy-saving Race Car & Formula Car, and University-Enterprise United Technology Center. As a characteristic major of Taiyuan University of Technology, Industrial Design Major was opened in 1995 and began to recruit science and engineering students in 1996. Electromechanical Engineering Major, whose predecessor was Fluid Transmission & Control Major founded in 1970, was newly opened in 2017. It has the provincial/departmental-level talent cultivating platforms including National-Local Joint Engineering Laboratory in Mining Fluid Control, Key Laboratory for New Sensors and Intelligent Control of the Ministry of Education/ Shanxi Province. It has characteristics and advantages in terms of intelligent control of heavy equipments, fluid transmission and control, and mechanic-electronic-hydraulic integration of mining equipments.

Mechanical Design &Manufacture & Automation

Cultivation Goals: To meet the needs of the regional economic construction and industrial and social development, this major cultivates high-quality engineering and technical talents who have good quality in humanities and social sciences, stronger social sense of responsibility and good engineering professional ethics, master the basic knowledge and skills required by engagement in mechanical engineering, have certain innovation consciousness, higher engineering practice ability, and good communication and cooperation ability, and can engage in the production and technical management, engineering design, technical development, scientific research, operation and sales, and so on in mechanical engineering and the related fields, and also solve complex problems of mechanical engineering by integrated use of theory and professional knowledge in Mechanical Engineering and related disciplines.

Cultivation Requirements: Students mainly learn the basic theory of mechanical design and manufacturing and the basic knowledge of microelectronic technology, computer technology and information processing technology, accept the basic training for modern mechanical engineers, and have the basic skills for design and manufacture of mechanical products, equipment control, as well as production organization and management.

Students are enrolled without a professional direction determined, select mechanical manufacturing & automation, mechanical design & theory or other professional directions according to the social demand and individual preference in the third school year after two years of common basic courses, and complete the basic training for engineers through graduation design.

Major Courses: theoretical mechanics, mechanics of materials, descriptive geometry and mechanical drawing, mechanical principles, mechanical design, electrical & electronic technology, principle & application of microcomputer, fundamentals of mechanical control engineering, mechanical engineering testing technology, fundamentals of mechanical manufacturing technology, electromechanical transmission & control, fundamentals of computer 3D mechanical design, hydraulic & pneumatic transmission, etc.

Industrial Design

Cultivation Goals: This major cultivates interdisciplinary backup talents of industrial designers who have solid basic theory, basic knowledge and application ability of industrial design, international vision and sense of social responsibility, comprehensive way of innovative thinking, and team-work spirit, and can carry out innovation of industrial products, and relevant development, research, planning, education and management in the fields of service model design, transmission design, man-machine interactive design, environmental and display design, etc. in enterprises and institutions, professional design institutions, or scientific research units.

Cultivation Requirements: Students mainly learn the basic theory and basic knowledge of industrial design, accept the basic training in the aspects of principle, procedure, method and design expression of industrial design, and have the basic ability to properly treat the mutual relationship between industrial design and environment, user, market, function, shape, color, structure, material, and process, and also integrate these relationships in expression of product design and service design. This major requires fundamental painting basics.

Major Courses: engineering mechanics, electrotechnics, fundamentals of mechanical design, industrial arts, three major compositions, product form design, computer aided design (CAD), visual communication design, industrial modeling, man-machine engineering, design psychology, fast performance of design, etc.

Vehicle Engineering

Cultivation Goals: Oriented by the talent demand of the regional economic construction and national automobile industry, and closely tracking the new progress and industrial trends of auto technology, this major cultivates technical talents of Vehicle Engineering who have humanistic quality and professional ethics, social sense of responsibility, innovative spirit, and ability to solve actual problems. Students can engage in design, manufacturing, testing, analysis, management, scientific research and teaching related to vehicle engineering and new energy vehicles in enterprises, high-tech companies, research institutes, and technical colleges after graduation.

Cultivation Requirements: Students in this major mainly learn mathematics, physics and other basic sciences, the basic theories of mechanical and vehicle engineering, electronics and computer, and information processing and other scientific technologies, get familiar with the advanced research, development and production process for auto parts and whole vehicles, master the design, analysis, manufacture, test and control technology and related specifications and standards for automobile products, understand the modern design methods and means, accept the basic training for modern mechanical engineers, and complete professional skill training necessary for vehicle engineering, and have ability to analyze and solve complex engineering problems by comprehensively using the scientific theory and technology learned.

Professional Directions: This major has two professional directions, i.e. vehicle engineering and new energy automobile.

Major Courses: engineering graphics, theoretical mechanics, mechanics of materials, mechanical principle, mechanical design, computer and computer aided design and analysis series courses, automobile structure, automobile theory, automobile design, automobile manufacturing technology, engine principle, automotive electronic control technology, automotive inspection and test technique, engine design or new energy technology for automobile and other professional basic and specialized courses.

Electromechanical Engineering

Cultivation Goals: To meet the needs of the regional economic construction and industrial and social economic development, this major cultivates high-quality interdisciplinary engineering and technical talents who have good quality in humanities and social sciences, stronger social sense of responsibility and good engineering professional ethics, master the basic knowledge and skills required by engagement in electromechanical engineering, grasp the basic theory and professional knowledge in mechanical, hydraulic, electronic, computer technology, automatic control and other pluralistic structure, and have systematic engineering thinking and innovation ability. Students can be engaged in design, manufacturing, testing, analysis, management, scientific research and teaching related to electromechanical systems and equipments in scientific research institutions, enterprises and technical colleges after graduation.

Cultivation Requirements: Students in this major which faces high-end equipment manufacturing, coal machine, metallurgy and other industries and features intelligentization, informatization and mechanical-electrical-hydraulic integration, learn the basic theoretical knowledge in mechanical, hydraulic, electronic, automatic control and testing, and other aspects, accept the basic training for modern mechanical engineers, and complete professional skill training necessary for electromechanical engineering, and have the basic ability to engage in design, manufacturing and production organization and management of electromechanical systems and equipments.

Major Courses: theoretical mechanics, mechanics of materials, descriptive geometry and mechanical drawing, mechanical principle, mechanical design, circuit principle, automatic control principle, digital electronic technology, analog electronic technology, modern manufacturing system, fundamentals of mechanical manufacturing technology, computer control system, electromechanical control technology, mechanical engineering testing technology, hydraulic servo system, electro-hydraulic proportional control technology, industrial automation network, and motion control technology.
