College of Mining Engineering

The College of Mineral Engineering features an integrated cultivation system of colliery talents, divided into 7 teaching Departments of Mining Engineering, Safety Science and Engineering, Underground Engineering, Geoscience and Engineering, Surveying and Mapping Science and Technology, Mineral Processing Engineering, and Colliery Mechanical and Electrical Technology, and two experimental centers of Mining and Geoscience. We have a Key Lab for In-situ Property Improvement Mining, Ministry of Education, Shanxi Institute of Mining Technology (SXIMT), Shanxi Green Mine Engineering Technology Center, and Shanxi Safety Engineering Technology Center. The College has 9 majors of bachelor’s degree, namely mining engineering (divided into directions of mining, colliery electrification, and colliery machinery), safety engineering, resource exploration engineering, geological engineering, exploration technology and engineering, surveying and mapping engineering, geographic information science, mineral process engineering, and urban underground space engineering. Among them, mining engineering, mineral process engineering, resource exploration engineering, and surveying and mapping engineering are brand majors of Shanxi Province, and safety engineering is a feature major of the Ministry of Education and one of the majors that first carry out the Excellent Engineers Training Plan. The College now has 215 faculty and staff, including 181 teachers, 15 party and administrative staff, and 20 instructional assistants. Among them, there is 1 double-employed academician, 2 winners of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 4 Sanjin Scholars, and 2 specially-appointed professors of Shanxi 100 Talent Program, 29 professors, and 71 associate professors (including 23 doctoral supervisors and 91 master supervisors), 10 senior engineers, and 106 lecturers and engineers. There are 149 teachers with a doctorate. We now have 2 first-level-discipline programs for post-doctoral studies of mineral engineering and safety science and engineering, and 8 doctorate conferring programs of mining engineering, geotechnical engineering, mineral process engineering, mineral resource prospecting and exploration, engineering mechanics, safety science and engineering, underground engineering and colliery electromechanical engineering; 13 master’s degree conferring programs of mining engineering, safety science and engineering, mineral resource prospecting and exploration, engineering mechanics, geodetection and information technology, map cartography and geographic information engineering, mineral process engineering, geological engineering, geodesy and surveying engineering, photogrammetry and remote sensing, geotechnical engineering, underground construction, and colliery electromechanical engineering; and 3 Master of Engineering conferring programs of mineral engineering, geological engineering and safety engineering. The Mining Engineering is a key discipline in Shanxi and China. The Safety Science and Engineering, Mineral Prospecting and Exploration, and Mineral Process Engineering are key disciplines in Shanxi. Now we have over 500 registered doctorate and master degree candidates, over 300 candidates for master of engineering, and more than 3,500 undergraduates.

Our College, aiming at cultivating high-level professionals in technology, research and management, enjoys strong teaching and research abilities, and have up-to-date teaching and research facilities. We have undertaken over 30 international cooperation, National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and national key projects, over 100 provincial and ministerial projects, and more than 300 businesses-entrusted scientific research projects. We have the ability to offer comprehensive services in mineral resource exploration, mine design and technological development, mine safety, surveying and mapping and geographic information system (GIS) design, and mineral processing.

1. Mining Engineering Direction

Cultivation Goals:The professional training has a good humanities and international vision, to meet the social, economic, scientific and technological development requirements, to master a solid foundation of the theory and systematic professional knowledge, and could engage in planning and design, production management, education and engineering research work in the field of coal resources and other mineral resources development, and get the capability of solving the complex problems in mining projects and vocational registration, and can take an important responsibility for individuals or teams.

Cultivation Requirements:Students mainly study mechanics, engineering drawings, electrical and electronic technology, university computer foundation, geology, mining machinery, rock mechanics and engineering, mining systematic engineering, mine environmental protection and safety, mining methods and design, mine ventilation and safety, the basic theory and basic skills of mine roadway engineering, mine pressure and rock formation control, slope stability, mine regulation and so on, and have the ability to solve complex engineering problems in mine planning, mine management and mine design.

Cultivation Requirements:Students mainly learn the basic theory and basic of electrical and electronic technology, coal mine equipment driving technology, mining, mine ventilation and safety, PLC principles and applications, single-chip principles and mine applications, mine power supply, automatic control system and comprehensive automation of coal, through the basic training of coal mine electrification engineers, they will be equipped with the ability of solving the complex mine electrical engineering problems in design and management of coal mine power supply system, automatic control of coal mine equipment and integrated automation.

Cultivation Goals: To cultivate the applications of innovative high-level specialized personnel who can meet the needs of social, economic, scientific and technological development, with good humanities, safety and health concepts, teamwork awareness, international vision and innovative spirit, and can master the basic theory of natural science, safety science theory and safety engineering expertise, who can engage in research and development, analysis and design, management and evaluation, testing and monitoring, education and training, emergency rescue and accident handling in safety and engineering, and also can handling the complex problems in the fields of public safety, mining, construction, chemical, fire control, machinery, electric power and other industries and fields.

Cultivation Requirements: With the capacity of research and development, analysis and design, management and evaluation, testing and monitoring, education and training, emergency rescue and incident handling in safety engineering technology. Be able to use safety science, safety technology and engineering, emergency management and rescue, occupational safety and health of specialized knowledge to solve complex safety engineering problems. After graduated for about five years, they can be the management backbone who are equipped with the quality and ability of registering safety engineering. Cultivation Goals: To cultivate innovative engineering and technical personnel who can systematically grasp the basic theory of coal and other mineral resources of exploration project with their professional knowledge, expertise, methods as well as strong practical ability, advanced scientific research and innovation awareness in order to apply to strategic national mineral resource needs. A comprehensive development in resource exploration and evaluation, scientific research and management is achieved by the development of geological engineers in the field of coal and other mineral exploration through professional knowledge, ability and quality. 5 years of continuous learning and professional practice guarantees the independent ability in the field of coal and other mineral resources by exploration engineering design, application of research projects and management work engaged in production as a unit of mechanical backbone and technical managers.

Cultivation Requirements:Strong humanities and social science literacy, a strong sense of social responsibility and good professional ethics to comply with academic ethics and to ensure professional integrity.Professional experience in resource exploration engineering work including mathematics, physics and chemistry theory. Basic knowledge and methods including geological, solid mineral and coal geology. The ability to acquire and apply geological data in order to understand the forefront of the development of the profession. In detail they have to master the basic knowledge of computer (including the use of commonly used computer software and mastering a computer language) to solve the relevant geological problems.The basic ability to complete the basic training of coal and solid mineral geology engineers including a strong sense of innovation, initial scientific research capabilities, comprehensive use of the theory and methods in mineral resources, coal exploration, development of geological evaluation and economic analysis.
