Abstract:
Traffic signal control is one of the major branches of traffic engineering. It has proven to be the most practice oriented approach and the most effective strategy for improving urban transportation system operations. This presentation will first introduce some basics of traffic signal control. The state of the practice will focus on critical issues and challenges facing the signal control community as well as technologies and tools to help resolve these challenges. The discussions will use several case examples to demonstrate the applications of these technology tools. Finally, a perspective will be given regarding future developments of traffic control systems.
