To further advance open education and optimize the global cooperation landscape, Vice President Sang Shengbo visited the Embassy of Uruguay in Beijing on October 24th. He held talks with Mariana Seoane, Vice Rector of the University of the Republic of Uruguay (Udelar), and formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding between TYUT and Udelar.

During the talks, Sang reviewed the progress of cooperation since TYUT’s representatives visited the Embassy in April and June of this year, expressing gratitude for the Embassy’s support in promoting exchanges and cooperation between TYUT and Uruguayan institutions. Subsequently, Sang provided a detailed introduction to the Udelar delegation about TYUT’s history, disciplinary strengths, international cooperation, and cultural exchanges. He expressed the hope to enhance mutual understanding and expand teaching and research cooperation in areas such as low-carbon energy and information technology through student exchanges, credit recognition, sports-cultural activities, and other exchange programs. Quoting the saying, “No mountain or ocean can distance people who have shared aspirations,” he conveyed his aspirations for the broad and promising collaboration between the two universities.

Mariana Seoane introduced Udelar’s history and current status, expressing the willingness to engage in in-depth exchanges and cooperation with TYUT in multiple fields. She stated that she looks forward to taking the signing of the MoU as an important opportunity, starting with short-term exchanges and cultural interactions for faculty and students, to gradually promote comprehensive and multi-level practical cooperation, allowing the fruits of collaboration to benefit faculty and students of both universities as soon as possible.

Witnessed by Sebastián Bandera, Consul of the Embassy, the two universities formally signed the Memorandum of Understanding Between Taiyuan University of Technology and University of the Republic of Uruguay. Both parties agreed to realize mutual visits promptly and establish effective working mechanisms to translate cooperative intentions into concrete projects, jointly writing a new chapter in China-Uruguay higher education cooperation.

The University of the Republic of Uruguay (Udelar), founded in 1849 and located in the capital Montevideo, is Uruguay’s oldest and top-ranked public university, as well as one of the largest public universities in Latin America by student enrollment. The university currently comprises 17 faculties, offering a complete range of bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs, with over 80,000 enrolled students. Representatives from its Faculty of Chemistry, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Faculty of Engineering, Faculty of Medicine, and Office of International Relations, along with relevant officials from TYUT’s College of International Education Exchanges (International Cooperation Department), participated in the meeting.
