On May 7, TYUT President Sun Hongbin met with a delegation led by Marat Rudakov, First Vice-Rector of Saint Petersburg Mining University (Russia), at Yingxi Campus. During the visit, both sides attended the International Forum on Energy Security Technology and Development, held an inter-institutional exchange and cooperation symposium, visited key research platforms, and engaged in in-depth discussions on deepening Sino-Russian higher education cooperation, collaborative scientific research innovation, and joint cultivation of high-level talent.

During the meeting, President Sun welcomed Vice-Rector Rudakov and his delegation on their return visit and reviewed the positive progress made in recent years in areas such as faculty and student exchanges, scientific research cooperation, and international talent cultivation. He noted that SPMU is a leading institution in Russia’s energy and mining sector, and that both sides have maintained a strong cooperative relationship since 2016, built on a solid foundation with broad prospects for future collaboration. Amid profound changes in the global energy landscape and the accelerated transition toward green and low-carbon development, new opportunities and challenges have emerged in areas such as energy security, smart mining, and polar energy development. Sun expressed hope that both sides would leverage their respective disciplinary strengths to deepen research cooperation in areas including polar energy, deep resource exploration, intelligent mining, and green energy, advance the construction of a Belt and Road joint laboratory, and actively pursue Sino-Russian intergovernmental science and technology cooperation projects, so as to continuously raise the level of international research collaboration.

Sun also expressed hope for further strengthening joint educational programs and talent cultivation, deepening collaboration in areas such as joint institute development, graduate student co-supervision, and faculty and student exchanges. He proposed exploring a dual-supervisor model to facilitate joint research and exchange opportunities for outstanding graduate students from both universities. At the same time, he called for further improving long-term cooperation mechanisms, continuing activities such as summer research programs, faculty visits, and international academic exchanges, and expanding and elevating the scope of cooperation.

Rudakov expressed gratitude for TYUT’s warm reception and spoke highly of the positive outcomes achieved through the bilateral cooperation. He noted that SPMU attaches great importance to its partnership with TYUT and is deeply impressed by TYUT’s research strengths in polar clean energy, smart mining, and deep resource development. He expressed hope that the two sides would further strengthen joint research platform development on the current cooperation, promote graduate student co-supervision and collaborative innovation, and continuously achieve new progress in their cooperation.

During the visit, Rudakov and his delegation attended the International Forum on Energy Security Technology and Development hosted by TYUT. Xiao Liantuan, TYUT’s Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice-President, and SPMU Vice-Rector Rudakov each delivered speeches at the forum’s opening ceremony. During the forum, the two sides jointly inaugurated the “Taiyuan University of Technology – Saint Petersburg Mining University Graduate Student Joint Training Base.” Experts and scholars from both countries conducted academic exchanges on topics such as mining geology, green safety technologies, advanced functional materials, and energy chemical engineering.

In addition, the delegation visited TYUT’s Polar Environment Clean Energy Laboratory, where they gained an in-depth understanding of TYUT’s research achievements in energy supply for extreme polar environments, clean energy system development, and the application of Antarctic scientific expedition equipment.

Yang Xiaowei, TYUT Academic Vice President, held an inter-institutional exchange and cooperation symposium with SPMU Vice-Rector Rudakov and his delegation. Discussions focused on joint institute development, collaborative research platform construction, and alignment of talent cultivation systems, reaching a broad consensus on further deepening cooperation.

Heads of the International Cooperation Department, Graduate School, College of Electrical and Power Engineering, College of Mining Engineering, and College of Safety and Emergency Management Engineering participated in the above events.
