On the morning of May 15, TYUT held a grand honorary professorship appointment ceremony at the Conference Center, Yingxi Campus. Professor Buddhima Indraratna, Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and Director of the Transport Research Centre at the University of Technology Sydney, and Professor Torsten Wichtmann, Chair Professor of Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering and Environmental Geotechnics at Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, were appointed as Honorary Professors of TYUT. Party Secretary Shen Xingquan attended the ceremony, along with Party and administrative leaders and faculty and student representatives from the College of Civil Engineering. The ceremony was presided over by the head of the College of Civil Engineering.
Prior to the appointment ceremony, Secretary Shen Xingquan held in-depth discussions with Professor Buddhima Indraratna and Professor Torsten Wichtmann regarding the future development of TYUT’s civil engineering discipline, interdisciplinary construction, joint talent cultivation, and international cooperation in cutting-edge research fields.




During the appointment ceremony, the head of the College of Civil Engineering introduced the backgrounds and work achievements of Professor Buddhima Indraratna and Professor Torsten Wichtmann to the attendees. Secretary Shen Xingquan presented the Honorary Professor appointment letters to the two professors, and both sides exchanged gifts. The two professors each delivered an acceptance speech, expressing their deep honor at being appointed as Honorary Professors of TYUT and stating that they would wholeheartedly contribute to the development and construction of TYUT’s civil engineering discipline, as well as talent cultivation, and international cooperation.
After the ceremony, the two professors visited the civil engineering laboratories and had in-depth exchanges with the research teams of the College of Civil Engineering.
This appointment of Honorary Professors is of significant and far-reaching importance to the future development of TYUT’s civil engineering discipline. Both professors are leading scholars in the international civil engineering field, with extensive academic influence and rich experience in international cooperation. Their joining will strongly promote the internationalization of TYUT’s civil engineering discipline and enhance its international academic reputation and competitiveness. Furthermore, through joint talent cultivation and cooperative applications for international research projects, their presence will foster the output of high-level research achievements and the growth of young faculty, injecting strong momentum into the leap development of TYUT’s civil engineering discipline and its goal of becoming a domestically first-class and internationally renowned discipline.
【Scholars Biography】
Professor Buddhima Indraratna is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and currently serves as Director of the Transport Research Centre at the University of Technology Sydney. He is also a Life Member of the Australian Geomechanics Society, Fellow of the Royal Society of New South Wales (FRSN), Fellow of Engineers Australia (FIEAust), Life Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (FASCE), and Fellow of the Geological Society of London (FGS). He has published over 1,100 academic papers, is a highly cited scholar in the international geotechnical engineering field, with an H-index of 97 and over 35,000 total citations, and has delivered more than 90 keynote speeches. He has received numerous major international awards, including the Transport Medal from Engineers Australia, the Thomas Telford Award from the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK), and the Robert Quigley Award from the Canadian Geotechnical Society.
Professor Torsten Wichtmann is the head of the Chair of Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering and Environmental Geotechnics at Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, and a well-known scholar in the international geotechnical engineering field. Professor Wichtmann has published over 300 academic papers, with an H-index of 44 and over 7,700 total citations, and has authored many highly cited papers. His pioneering research on cumulative strain models for soils under high-cycle loading and the small-strain stiffness of granular soils has been highly praised and widely cited by international scholars. He has received numerous academic honors, including the Dr.-Heinrich-Kost Award from Ruhr University Bochum, the Professor Zerna Award for the best doctoral dissertation from the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, and the Carl-Rappert-Grundbaupreis of the German Geotechnical Society (DGGT).
