TYUT Climbs to 181st in the Nature Index Global Rankings

2026/09/16 12:00:00

The latest Nature Index rankings were released on September 14. Based on data covering the period from June 1, 2025, to May 30, 2026, Taiyuan University of Technology (TYUT) ranked 81st among universities in mainland China and 181st globally, with a total Share of 137.44. TYUT is the only university in Shanxi Province to place among the world’s top 200 universities.

Notably, compared with the corresponding period a year earlier (June 1, 2024, to May 30, 2025), TYUT made substantial gains in both rankings. Its position among universities in mainland China improved from 122nd to 81st, a rise of 41 places, while its global ranking climbed from 350th to 181st, an impressive gain of 169 places.

As a “Double First-Class” university, TYUT aligns its development with national strategic priorities and regional needs, while building on its distinctive strengths in “coal science.” With its leading academic disciplines serving as a driving force and supported by interdisciplinary collaboration, the university continues to strengthen fundamental research and generate high-quality research outcomes. At the same time, technical challenges arising from engineering applications and the commercialization of research findings help guide and refine its fundamental research priorities. This leap in the rankings reflects the university’s sustained efforts in key academic disciplines and the steady improvement of its fundamental research capabilities.

Building on its achievements, TYUT continues to make further progress. These accomplishments are closely linked to the university’s strategic planning and comprehensive reform efforts. The TYUT Party Committee designated 2024 as a year of intensified efforts to deepen reform and overcome key challenges. Over the past three years, TYUT has fully implemented the national innovation-driven development strategy and closely aligned its development with regional priorities for high-quality growth. Guided by the “Double First-Class” Initiative, it has continued to pursue high-quality development by strengthening its academic foundations and institutional capacity.

In the first year of the 15th Five-Year Plan period, TYUT has continued to uphold its educational philosophy of “putting students at the center and teachers at the foundation.” It has implemented the “Five Development Strategies”: strengthening the university through talent development, enhancing institutional capacity, promoting reform and innovation, expanding openness and cooperation, and improving management and operational efficiency. It has also steadily advanced its “Ten Major Projects” and “Ten Reforms Initiatives.” Currently, TYUT is prioritizing academic discipline development and coordinating efforts to promote the integrated advancement of education, science and technology, and talent development. It is also leveraging artificial intelligence to drive high-quality development. Guided by its “151180” Strategic Initiative, it has embarked on a new journey toward building a distinctive, open, research-oriented, first-class university.
